Maui the Shapeshifter, a captivating 2D hand-drawn Metroidvania game based on the titular shapeshifting Polynesian demigod from Play on Worlds (Ebenezer and the Invisible World), swims ashore with its first trailer, as revealed during the Future Games Show at Gamescom where the player can use Maui’s legendary powers to combat Cemyk, a corrupting force from another world while wielding the powerful magic fish hook to overcome challenges and restore balance.
The game draws inspiration from Polynesian mythology, featuring the legendary shapeshifting demigod Maui. The game takes players on a thrilling journey across a richly detailed Polynesian island, blending myth and magic in a quest to restore balance and protect wildlife from a malevolent force.
In Maui the Shapeshifter, players harness Maui’s legendary shapeshifting powers to combat the corrupting influence of Cemyk, an evil creature from another world. By transforming into various majestic animals, guided by the spirit of Aumakua, players can overcome challenges and explore a naturally enchanted Polynesian island teeming with secrets.
Maui the Shapeshifter Interesting Features
Players can shapeshift into different creatures, each offering unique abilities. For example, soar to new heights as a Hoary Bat, block projectiles while sliding as a Green Sea Turtle, or glide over vast distances as a Kamehameha Butterfly. The power to shapeshift is essential in countering the mutated wildlife that Cemyk has unleashed on the island.
Maui’s iconic magic fish hook plays a crucial role in the gameplay, allowing players to manipulate the environment, solve puzzles, and carve new paths across the island. This tool can be upgraded to enhance its strength, range, and other attributes. Additionally, players can explore land and ocean to discover rare powers through a versatile slot system.
Traverse a Sprawling Metroidvania Map
The game features a sprawling Metroidvania map filled with diverse biomes, including jungles, volcanoes, beaches, and the legendary Menehune village. Players can also venture into a hidden spiritual realm, where more secrets and challenges await. Interactions with NPCs add depth to the journey, with some characters offering help while others present obstacles.
Carlos Martin, Founder of Play on Worlds, expressed excitement about the project and said, “After our work on Ebenezer and the Invisible World, we wanted to create a vibrant experience in a different setting while staying true to our love for Metroidvanias. We hope players will embrace this new adventure in Maui the Shapeshifter.”
Play on Worlds is a video game company that produces indie budget games committed to excellence in gameplay and deep universes. The team’s first commercial release was Ebenezer and the Invisible World, a supernatural, fantasy adventure based on Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story, A Christmas Carol. Their follow-up game, Maui the Shapeshifter, continues the team’s passion for high-quality 2D Metroidvanias.
Maui, the Shapeshifter will be available on PC via Steam.
