When the PS4 came out in 2013, players across the globe immediately got hooked to its fantastic games. So when Sony announced the release of PS5, they all asked the same question: “will ps4 games work on ps5?” And if you’re thinking about the same, this article is where you get your answer.

The PS4 has a wide variety of games, and most of them are super popular. So Sony did make them compatible with PS4. However, there are some games that don’t work. And there are some that may glitch a little but will work. So to best answer your question of can ps5 play ps4 games, we will go through each type of game and tell you whether or not it works.

Will PS4 games work on PS5

Sony recently put out a press release in which they said that “the overwhelming majority” of games work on PS5. This means that the answer to ‘can ps5 play ps4 games’ is yes in most instances. For example, CS: GO works well, and you can click here to read an insightful article about its ranks.

But an overwhelming majority does not mean all games. And that is where this becomes a bit complicated. There are about nine games that don’t work on ps4, such as We Sing and DWVR. And all nine have the statement “playable on ps4 only” written next to them in their play store titles.

There is also a third group of games. These games work to some extent. For example, if you’re playing Assassins Creed on PS5, you won’t have all the features you’d have access to on PS4. There are quite a few of these games. But the store gives disclaimers, so you’ll be able to identify them.

Physical game discs

Can ps5 play ps4 games with physical discs? Yes. There are no two ways about this. If you have a physical disc, you can plug it into your new console. You’ll also retain access to any online software bought on your PS4.

Common questions

We’ve talked about the general compatibility of ps4 and ps5 games and will ps4 games work on ps5. Now we’re going to address specific questions that have arisen in the gaming community. You’ve probably seen them floating around on message boards.

1. Can ps5 play ps4 games I bought when playing on the latter?

As long as you use the same PSN account for both gaming consoles, you will have access to all the games bought on the older console.

2. Will ps4 games work on ps5 better than they did before?

PS5 is a newer gaming console. And new always means better since Sony is always improving their technology. You can use a ‘boost mode’ and improve your performance. Do remember that this mode doesn’t work for every single game.

In summary, can ps5 play ps4 games? Yes, it can. And will ps4 games work on ps5? Most games will. And you’ll be able to identify the ones that don’t. Happy gaming!
