Melbourne Studio Plot Twist Brings Rural Victorian Murder Mystery to Steam Early Access

An Australian indie studio is betting that hand-crafted gothic storytelling and a $3.99 price tag can win over a global audience hungry for something genuinely different

Melbourne-based Plot Twist studio will release Ashes, an indie narrative game and interactive graphic novel built around a gripping murder mystery game, on Steam Early Access on May 7, giving global players their first chance to step into Azar Warren’s dangerous world.

In the world of graphic novels, there’s a unique tension that exists in the quiet moments between panels, an unspoken weight filled with fear and uncertainty. Plot Twist, an indie studio, believes this tension can be transformed into an engaging interactive experience.

Set against the backdrop of Victoria, Australia, Ashes follows the story of Azar Warren, a 16-year-old skater who witnesses a horrific murder. In a desperate bid for safety, she flees to her estranged grandfather Stan’s rural compound, only to discover that the man who should protect her may harbor secrets just as menacing as the threats pursuing her.

With its gothic edge, the game set out to engage players through its thrilling narrative, and lead developer Cléa Frost, who has a rich background in film and television, clearly knows how to sharpen those edges.

More Than Skin-Deep

What sets Ashes apart as a genuine experience, rather than just a fancy slideshow, is the team’s intentional focus on interactivity.

Frost mentions that they drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including the award-winning graphic novel series “What’s the Furthest Place From Here” and innovative games like “Florence,” “The Night Fisherman,” and “The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car.” Each of these works has quietly pushed the boundaries of what a story-driven game can be.

“As with those titles, our aim is for the interactivity and puzzles within Ashes to feel fully integrated so that they’re both fun to play and narratively meaningful,” Frost told KoreaGameDesk.

The puzzles invite players to take on a variety of challenges, from piecing together torn photographs and cracking a lockbox code to taking aim at targets on a makeshift shooting range. Each puzzle feels integral to the world, not like random additions.

The visual style brings everything together with a handmade charm. The art, soundtrack, and sound design all reflect a unique fanzine aesthetic, grounding the game in a distinctly regional Australian atmosphere.

An Early Access Cliffhanger Treated with Care

The Early Access launch brings players the first 11 chapters of the game, with a full 1.0 release scheduled for December 2026. This approach can be risky for narrative games on Steam, as players often hesitate to invest in a story that feels incomplete. Frost openly acknowledges this challenge and is equally straightforward about how to address it.

“While the narrative is not complete in the Early Access version of the game, we end on the type of cliffhanger that we hope players will find exciting rather than simply frustrating,” she said.

“Chapter Eleven finishes on a huge escalation in the central conflict, but also at a point where the player has been able to uncover secrets and find clues as to the game’s central mystery. So it’s a crafted, considered ending rather than an abrupt rug pull.”

The studio also intends to add new narrative content and mini-games to the first 11 chapters before the 1.0 launch, meaning returning players won’t simply pick up a saved file, they’ll re-enter a richer, expanded version of what they already played. At US$3.99, the entry point is low enough to absorb the incompleteness without resentment.

Built for an Underserved Audience

Plot Twist is positioning Ashes in part as a game by and for women, at a time when the conversation around female-led narratives in gaming is louder than ever but the output remains inconsistent.

“As a game about and mostly by women, we’re also hoping that Ashes will appeal to a core audience of players keen to see depictions of female characters that deviate from more standard fare,” Frost said.

This isn’t just a catchy marketing line; it reflects a deep design philosophy woven into a gothic, psychologically tense narrative. The story follows a teenage girl as she navigates a world of betrayal, danger, and distrust, set against the backdrop of rural Victoria, a setting rarely explored in games.

Back in February 2026, the studio released a Steam demo showcasing the first three chapters of Azar’s journey. Players had the opportunity to meet Stan and experience the compound’s unsettling atmosphere before deciding whether to invest in the Early Access version.

The Long Game

For Plot Twist, Ashes is more than just a game; it’s the cornerstone of a larger vision. Frost envisions success in a way that transcends the typical launch-week sales.

Instead, the goal is to create a diverse library of narrative-driven games that could include branching adventure stories, text-based interactive tales, and engaging visual novels.

At the heart of this endeavor is a vibrant community of players who will journey alongside the studio, supporting and experiencing each new release over time.

“I think players are keen to see new story worlds and formats,” she added. “There’s a lot of experimentation happening right now, and I am excited to see what comes out of that work.”

She also flagged a trend worth watching: a growing appetite for shorter-form narrative games, provided they are “satisfying to play and priced right,” a description that fits Ashes almost to the letter.

Community feedback, particularly around mini-game effectiveness and overall interactivity, will directly shape how the game evolves through Early Access.

“We already know that one of the key areas that we’re interested in exploring with the community is the effectiveness of the mini-games and the overall amount of interactivity in the game,” Frost said. “So I think that’s a core area where players could impact how the game evolves.”

Ashes launches on Steam Early Access on May 7, 2026, for PC and Mac at US$3.99, with a full 1.0 release scheduled for December 2026.
