Developer FragLab and publisher TwoCakesStudio announce the world premiere of Forest Escape: Last Train, a cooperative horror game inspired by The Escape Backrooms, by revealing the title on Steam today and inviting players worldwide to wishlist the game as it prepares for release, with the experience centered on teamwork-driven survival and escape from a hostile forest nightmare.
In the game, players will scavenge for parts, searching among the twisted remnants of what was once whole. The puzzles they encounter will challenge their perception of reality, forcing them to think in unconventional ways. As you gather resources, staying alert is crucial, for grotesque twig creatures lurk nearby, ready to attack. Their forms reflect the madness that surrounds you.
The locomotive is not just a machine; it is your lifeline, a battered beast that requires constant attention. You will need to fuel it and make repairs, taming it as you delve deeper into the Warden’s chaos.
Each section of the railway is locked tight, mirroring the mind you seek to understand. To progress, you must solve the twisted puzzles set before you, each one representing a piece of a shattered psyche awaiting the light of reason to break through its darkness.
The game is being developed by an experienced team that previously created the large-scale AAA title, Shatterline. The team is currently finalizing content and making technical improvements. As a result, a public playtest is planned for the near future, as the project has reached beta and is preparing for broader community testing to provide a best-in-class experience to gamers.
AAA Developers Tackle Backrooms-Style Horror
FragLab truly stands out in the co-op horror genre, bringing a wealth of experience to the table. The team is made up of industry veterans who have worked on well-known titles such as Warface, Crysis, and Battlefield. Now, they’re turning their formidable talents to a new project: Forest Escape: Last Train.
This game offers an intriguing 1-4 player experience in which teams probe the fragmented psyche of an unstable Warden. It sits right at the heart of the burgeoning backrooms horror trend, one that gained massive traction last year with Escape the Backrooms reaching an impressive 36,000 concurrent players on Steam.
However, FragLab puts a unique spin on this concept by swapping the monotonous maze rooms for a captivating forest environment. In this setting, your train acts not just as a refuge but also as a crucial element for progression, adding depth and innovation to the gameplay. It’s an exciting venture that promises to keep players engaged and immersed in its chilling narrative.
Key Features:

FRIENDSLOP OR SOLO ESCAPE
Team up with up to 3 friends for a chaotic ride balanced between horror and absurd hilarity. Meet bizarre twig creatures. Dance in an abandoned theme park. Face the madness together or brave it alone – either way, expect screams, laughs, and chaos.
YOUR TRAIN, YOUR SANCTUARY
Repair it. Fuel it. Protect it. Your locomotive is your only salvation in a world gone mad. Search for vital parts in deadly locations, upgrade your train, and piece together the Warden’s twisted story. It’s your lucky ticket to escape from the insanity.
SOLVE EERIE PUZZLES
Nothing here follows logic. The railway paths stay locked until you solve the riddles. Figure out the Warden’s crazy thinking to move forward. Each puzzle reveals a piece of his broken mind.
MINE. GATHER. SURVIVE!
Extract coal for fuel. Collect stones for defense. Trade for weapons and supplies. The longer you stay outside, the more danger you’re in. Grab what you need and get back to the train before something finds you.
Beta Testing Opens Soon
FragLab is nearing beta status and will soon conduct public playtests. The company is offering exclusive early access to press members and content creators, who can request access through this link provided by TwoCakesStudio. This exclusive access will be available before the wider community testing begins.
The Steam wishlist page went live on January 29, 2026, featuring a gameplay trailer that highlights the visual style, puzzle mechanics, and creature designs.
The game will launch with full localization in 12 languages, including Japanese, Korean, and various Chinese dialects, indicating its ambitions to reach global markets beyond the West. Pricing and release dates will be announced soon after today’s world premiere; however, the advanced stage of development suggests a launch window in 2026.
FragLab’s previous work with the live-service model in Shatterline indicates that Forest Escape: Last Train will receive post-launch content expansions. The studio’s experience balancing competitive shooters will be beneficial for tuning the difficulty in this co-op horror game, ensuring players feel appropriately challenged throughout.
