On March 11, Unknown Worlds Entertainment released the sixth developer vlog for Subnautica 2, showcasing a reimagined base-building system that offers players unparalleled creative freedom in underwater exploration and introduces co-op multiplayer support for up to four friends, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
Subnautica 2 continues the legacy of two beloved games, offering players an exciting new adventure. In the original Subnautica (2018), players found themselves alone in an alien ocean world, exploring a breathtaking yet terrifying underwater landscape.
Below Zero (2021) expanded this exploration with richer environments and a deeper story. Together, these titles established Unknown Worlds Entertainment as the leader in survival game design.
Now, built on Unreal Engine 5, Subnautica 2 takes everything to the next level. You’ll discover more vibrant alien biomes, encounter terrifying leviathan-class creatures, and experience a brand-new co-op multiplayer mode that the series has never offered before. For fans of survival games, this sequel marks the most significant creative leap the franchise has ever made.
A Base Building System That Breaks Every Rule
In Dev Vlog 6, the reveal of base building in Subnautica 2 stands out as the studio’s most ambitious project yet. Unlike traditional survival games that confine players to fixed room pieces, Unknown Worlds Entertainment has completely overhauled that approach.
The innovative procedural base building system empowers players to start with a basic room shape and then sculpt it freely, widening walls, carving out alcoves, and reshaping every surface without restrictions.
Additionally, players can attach customizable windows, unique lighting, decorative panels, doors, moonpools, and even stacked growbeds for underwater farming—all placed wherever they desire. This system doesn’t box players into pre-set shapes; it provides them with the tools to create whatever they can imagine. As the developers emphasized in the vlog, they believe no other survival game has offered anything quite like this.
Future updates are planned to introduce fully rounded rooms and options for custom base-color painting, further enhancing the base-building experience in Subnautica 2. For dedicated survival game fans who long for a truly personalized underwater exploration base, this procedural building system truly delivers.
The $750 Million Storm Behind the Scenes
Dev Vlog 6 arrives in the middle of an extraordinary legal drama. In July 2025, South Korean publisher Krafton fired Unknown Worlds Entertainment co-founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, along with former CEO Ted Gill, with a $250 million earn-out bonus squarely within reach.
The three executives immediately filed suit in the Delaware Chancery Court, alleging that Krafton deliberately delayed Subnautica 2 to dodge paying the bonus. Krafton fired back, alleging the founders “lost enthusiasm” for the project and “failed to invest the effort necessary” to meet their targets.
The fallout rattled the gaming world. At the time, Subnautica 2 ranked as the second-most-wishlisted game on Steam, suddenly caught in a $750 million corporate war. Nevertheless, the team at Unknown Worlds Entertainment never stopped building.
The co-op multiplayer reveal in February 2026 and now the procedural building system showcase in Dev Vlog 6 make one thing clear: this survival game is charging toward launch, not retreating from it.
What Gamers Can Expect at Launch
Subnautica 2 will enter Early Access in 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, with availability on platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Windows Store. The game features co-op multiplayer, allowing up to four players to join together, start a shared save, or drop into an existing solo world.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment emphasizes that while the iconic solo experience remains the primary focus, the co-op multiplayer enhances the adventure without overshadowing it.
After the Early Access phase, the developers aim for a full launch in 2027 or 2028. Although no specific Early Access date has been announced yet, anticipation grows as March progresses. With features like the base-building system, upgrades for underwater exploration, and co-op multiplayer, each vlog makes Subnautica 2 even more exciting. The ambition behind the base building alone positions this survival game as a standout title to watch in 2026.
