Pearl Abyss has set a remarkable precedent in gaming by merging Gugak , traditional Korean music, into its popular Black Desert MMORPG. This cultural fusion earned the company a commendation from the Ministry of Culture on December 27, celebrated during the National Gugak Center’s year-end ceremony. The award recognized Pearl Abyss’s contributions to the global gaming community and the promotion of traditional korean music.

This has been steadily making its way into video game soundtracks. Pearl Abyss’s Black Desert expansion, Land of Morning Light, is a shining example of this blend. Launched in September, the expansion offered players an immersive experience through its stunning visuals and innovative music.

Collaborating with the National Gugak Center and the Korea Heritage Service, Pearl Abyss introduced “Painting Joseon,” a piece that seamlessly combines Gugak with modern game compositions. This partnership marks a significant step in making traditional Korean music accessible to a wider, global gaming audience.

Though the fusion of traditional Korean music and gaming may seem unexpected, it is not without precedent. In 2001, the horror game White Day famously incorporated a track from renowned gayageum player Hwang Byung-ki. Fast forward to today, and Gugak continues to find a home in prominent game franchises. Pearl Abyss’s and NCSoft’s recent projects have proved that traditional Korean music can profoundly elevate the gaming experience.

A Gateway to Gugak

The growing influence of traditional Korean music in the gaming industry is a testament to its adaptability. The National Gugak Center has worked diligently to bridge the gap between traditional Korean music and younger generations, who may not typically engage with traditional music. Their efforts to showcase game soundtracks in a new light have sparked interest among younger audiences.

Last year, a partnership between the National Gugak Center and the National Theater of Korea brought game music to life through live performances. The concert series included pieces from games like Cookie Run: Kingdom and Crazyracing Kartrider, with performances reinterpreted using Gugak instruments. The success of these collaborations laid the foundation for future projects that continue to integrate Gugak into the gaming world.

The Game Sound Series

In line with its mission to make Korean music more accessible, the National Gugak Center launched its Game Sound Series, featuring traditional Gugak arrangements of beloved game tracks. Among the games included are Lies of P, Skul, MapleStory, and Black Desert. These soundtracks are now available on major streaming platforms, ensuring gamers worldwide can experience Gugak fresh and engagingly.

The release of Gugak-infused tracks from popular games like PUBG: Battlegrounds, League of Legends, and Night Crows further solidifies the genre’s role in the gaming industry. These games boast massive player bases, and including Gugak helps introduce traditional Korean music to a global audience.

A New Cultural Era

As Gugak grows prominence, it is no longer confined to its traditional roots. The collaboration between game developers like Pearl Abyss and institutions such as the National Gugak Center represents the start of a new era where the worlds of gaming and Korean cultural heritage intersect. The fusion of traditional Korean music with gaming creates a powerful, accessible avenue for younger generations to discover and appreciate traditional Korean art forms.

The integration of traditional Korean music into the gaming world, led by Pearl Abyss and supported by the National Gugak Center, highlights a transformative cultural shift. This partnership showcases how video games can entertain and serve as a platform for cultural exchange, bringing the ancient art of Gugak to a global audience in a modern and dynamic way.
